About Stevens Pass Mountain Resort

Stevens Pass has grown from its humble beginnings over 75 years ago to become one of the Northwest's premier resorts, and we reckon that protecting and restoring the natural resources that have provided us our livelihood is the least we can do.  We seek to lead by example in tackling climate change, sustainability, and resort efficiency. Supporting the expansion of Electric Vehicles (EV’s) in Washington is a natural step in reducing our carbon footprint.

In June 2011, we became the first resort and only mountain pass in the country to install public charging stations. Since then a few others have followed our lead, and we hope more will do so. It’s important to know how your power is produced before you can decide how much an EV would reduce your emissions. Our electricity comes almost entirely from clean, green hydropower delivered by Chelan PUD (vs. dirty coal). We won a federal grant to buy our two chargers, and we paid for installation. Station usage averages about 25 visits/month year-round (Mar 2013), and they’re full most weekends during our busy winter season.

How they work

Drivers unlock the station using a keyring or wallet swipe pass, or by calling the toll-free support number (1-888-758-4389) on each machine.  Each station can provide a trickle charge (120Volt) and a quicker charge (220Volt) to two separate electric vehicles simultaneously, allowing a total of 4 electric vehicles to charge at once here at the Pass.  Known as Level-II chargers, these units built by Coulomb Technologies Inc will allow EV drivers to fuel up while enjoying the resort’s recreational activities.

When are they open?

Our two chargers are available for anyone to use, 24hrs/day, year-round; the area is lit at night. Cellphone coverage is good at the Pass (AT&T and Verizon).

How long does it take to charge?

Owners of vehicles like the Nissan Leaf will gain approximately 15 miles of range for every hour of charging; other vehicles may be a little different.  Near-empty batteries will require 4-6 hours to be fully replenished – perfect for a day of skiing or mountain biking at the resort, or hiking from the trailhead of the Pacific Crest Trail!

What will it cost?

It’s free! The average user fee for charging at Level-II stations is approximately $5/session, but Stevens Pass will waive this charge for an introductory period. In general, fees can be paid through a charging network membership, or with any credit card, or by calling the toll free phone number on each unit.

What if they’re already in use?

Both charging stations are connected via cellphone datalink to the national ChargePoint Network, allowing anyone with a smartphone or computer to access station availability information in real-time, view other nearby charger locations, and sign up for Email/text alerts.  Reservations will be possible at Stevens Pass stations in the future, if the need arises.

Where are they exactly?

Located just to the left of the main plaza stairs at the head of lot A, on the south side of U.S. Highway 2.   

Is there any food service?

In the winter season (approx Dec 1 to late-April) many different lodges, lounges, and a coffee shop are open daily. In the summer (approx July through early-October) a small snack bar/grill is open weekends.

Are there restrooms nearby?

Yes, there are Forest Service toilets located at the entrance to Lot E, east of the chargers.

What other activities are nearby?

In the summer, there’s hiking, and mountain biking at our lift-served bike park. In the winter, we are open for snowboarding and skiing.  Cellphone coverage is good at the Pass (AT&T and Verizon).

Is there a quicker charging option?

The State of Washington has installed three super-fast charging stations (operating at 480volts DC) along U.S. Highway 2 in: Sultan, Skykomish, and Leavenworth.  These “Level-III” stations will help EV’s over the pass, and can charge most electric vehicles from zero to 80 percent capacity in just 20 minutes!
